The Bukluran Multi-purpose Cooperative started in 1996 with 50 members who made Christmas decorations to sell.  Over the last 12 years it has developed and expanded into a vibrant credit union and basic goods store cooperative.  For many years, the Sisters of Social Service subsidized the cooperative until it could become totally self sufficient.  Today, it receives no monetary subsidy although Sr. Marilena acts as a part time general manager (pro-bono).   The cooperative has 1,200 members and 102 associate members

Bahay Lingkod Community Center has developed along side the Cooperative.  It provides needed social services to the community.  Its current programs consist of:

  • Golden Hearts program for 150 adults over age 65 meets weekly and provides monthly celebration of life with free lunch and modest gifts to birthday celebrants; health check ups and seminars; craft making (with some livelihood skills component); exercise; ballroom dancing; and workshops/seminars/recollection for personal growth. Staff provides medical, Senior Id’s and other advocacy work and supervises participants’ mutual death aid program. Seniors are involved in many socio-religious celebrations which give them a sense of meaning and purpose in their old age.
  • Teenage Moms is a small program composed of 11 teen mothers and their children involved in weekly support meetings, livelihood skills development and socialization projects.
  • Computer Lab provides a Scholarship Program to at least 500 Grades VI to Fourth Years students that enable them to obtain basic computer literacy which impacts their school performance and job marketability favorably. Some drop outs and adults profit from the program too.
  • College Scholarships serve 33 college scholars who receive a stipend each semester to assist with their education costs. In addition, they receive value formation, leadership training and opportunities to be integrated in other programs of the center: the cooperative, the elderly program, the tutorial program, and the summer day camp.
  • Each weekend the Tutorial Program involves the Scholars in tutoring elementary age students. Each recipient receives one hour of tutoring a week.
  • Youth Program - Together with the other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Paliparan, we provide socialization, outings, values formation, and gathering space for a youth group that ranges from 40 to 70 participants.
  • Summer Day Camp is in its 11th year providing fun, skills, values, socialization skills to 1300 children each summer.  For the counselors, it provides job training and a small stipend as well as community building for both the counselors and campers.
  • Between 2005-2007 the Lunch program for served 170 children in elementary Grades I and II. We are currently exploring how we can integrate this program into the tutorial and summer day camp programs.
  • Advocacy and referral - The 4 barangays and the parish where the center is located work together in many areas including job referrals, placement for abused and neglected children and elders, referrals to legal and medical services, and other forms of advocacy.
  • Emergency Assistance is given at least once a year to very indigent members of the community who are in crisis situations.
Our programs are open to all people in the Paliparan community.
