Taiwan Ministry of the Sisters of Social Service
In 1963, the Sisters began their work in Taiwan. The first Medical Director of the Tien Medical Center was a Sister of Social Service, Sr. Ancilla Chen. Sisters of Social Service have been associated with this hospital for over 40 years with one of our own, Sr. Ancilla, founding the Family Medicine Department. Another of our Sisters, Sr. Theresa Tsou, founded the first psychological counseling center in Taiwan, which is still thriving today. We were also instrumental in creating curriculum and materials for the social work field, and Sr. Grace Boys, SSS, helped to translate the Social Work Ethics textbook that is used throughout Taiwan today.
The Sisters also founded one of the first senior centers in Taiwan, and have championed support for the chronically mentally ill.
Today, Sister Theresa Tsou along with other Sisters in Taiwan continue the groundbreaking work they started with women’s issues in Asia, including consciousness raising and empowerment, research into workers oversea and social work education at the university level.
